Organizations Should Be More Wary of the Past
To find the path forward, derive lessons from the past. It seems like sound advice, right? Lots of companies do it — and consultants, too: when faced with a challenge, find a few organizations that have faced the same issues that you have, reverse-engineer the reasons for their successes, and then incorporate them into your own strategy. That may sound like the diligent thing to do — but it can lead to trouble because these “lessons” are usually just generalizations that won’t work in practice. Why? There’s no way to replicate the conditions that these companies faced. Their successes were unique. And they took a lot of trial and error, practice, and feedback.
