Virtual Training Is the Future

Leaders often face challenges that they’ve never encountered before. In these unfamiliar situations, it’s easy to get emotional, make mistakes, and perform poorly. That’s why the USC Institute of Creative Technologies has been developing simulators that allow people to interact with virtual role players. Like flight simulators for pilots, these programs allow users to prepare for a wide range of scenarios that they may face in the future. So far, the technology has helped service men and women hone their negotiation and counseling skills. Other programs are teaching law students how to interact with child witnesses, showing doctors how to better serve patients, and instructing managers on how to give more useful performance reviews. The technology is still underdeveloped, of course, but it could have a huge impact on management training in the future.
