Government-Sponsored Health Care Aids Entrepreneurship
Choosing to start a business is never an easy decision. Failure rates are high, a livable salary isn’t guaranteed, and health care doesn’t come cheap. In short, there are a lot of risks. And if you have a family, a lack of affordable health care is enough to prevent you from opening up a new business. That’s why programs such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which provides health insurance to children in non–Medicare eligible families, are so important. In fact, Gareth Olds of Harvard Business School found that the rate of ownership of incorporated businesses among families whose income is hovering around 200% of the poverty line has increased from 4.3% to 5.8% since CHIP was implemented. That’s a significant jump.
