J.P. Morgan Chase

Organizational Culture Is What Leads Banks Astray
The U.S. Justice Department, you may have heard, is pressing J.P. Morgan Chase to pony up more than $11 billion for its bad deeds during the housing boom. That’s a lot of money. But will the hefty fine accomplish much? Probably not. The problem — and this was the case with Goldman Sachs, too — is that these punishments don’t go far enough in addressing the real issue: the organizational culture at these companies. Of course, that’s a much more complex thing to examine, but if we don’t take a hard look at the conditions, constraints, and pressures that lead these organizations astray, the cycle will continue.
