Economic Clusters Result in More Creative Freedom

Business clusters — think Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and Wall Street — are thought to increase productivity and spur innovation. The Garment District in New York City is another a good example. During Fashion Week, the close-connectedness of the District makes it easier for frantic designers to make last-minute adjustments to their dresses and other wares. But according to a new study, proximity isn’t the only advantage of clusters. The real key is freedom. Since most suppliers, manufacturers, and wholesalers are packed into one area, designers — even those who set up shop outside the cluster — have a plethora of options at their disposal, and are free to pursue their ideas via a wide range of resources.
