McDonald’s recently reported disappointing sales for a fifth consecutive quarter. One major reason the company isn’t performing well is that it has lost sight of its brand identity. For decades, the fast-food chain was popular and successful because it provided a playful experience (think Happy Meals). But these days, McDonald’s is spreading itself too thin with its McCafe, value menu, and healthy (but really not-so-healthy) offerings. Its menu of more than 180 items is way too congested. This should serve as a lesson. Even though the attempt to grow and expand offerings is the right impulse, if you don’t use your brand’s identity as a guide, you won’t achieve the results you want.
