App
Apple Store
For many wide-eyed young people, the app economy is pretty enticing from a monetary point of view, and success stories — think Flappy Birds — only kindle the flames. Perhaps it’s time for a dose of reality. There are currently more than a million apps at the Apple Store, and more than 250,000 registered app developers. An overwhelming majority of these developers won’t make enough money to pay their rent because the app economy is congested and has taken on the form of a winner-take-all market: a few apps will achieve insane levels of success, but most will fail. This isn’t to say that apps aren’t an avenue worth pursuing, but dreams of ditching college and getting rich should be put in context: There’s a better chance of winning the lotto.

Young App Developers Should Stay in School
